St. Joseph's General Hospital (SJGHEL) is looking for a General Surgeon Locum! St. Joseph's General Hospital in Elliot Lake is seeking a qualified General Surgeon to provide essential surgical coverage for 12-weeks out of the year. This role is critical to maintaining continuity of care, ensuring timely access to high-quality surgical services, and supporting the clinical team during periods of staffing transition or increased demand. The ideal candidate will be a board-certified FRCSC General Surgeon with a strong clinical background, a commitment to patient-centred care, and the flexibility to adapt to a dynamic, community-focused healthcare environment. Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive general surgical care, including pre-operative assessment, intra-operative management, and post-operative follow-up.
- Perform a full range of general surgical procedures in accordance with clinical guidelines and hospital protocols.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including anesthesia, nursing, and specialty consultants, to ensure coordinated patient care.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in electronic health records (EHR) in compliance with hospital and regulatory standards (Meditech Expanse).
- Participate in on-call rotations as required, ensuring 24/7 surgical coverage for emergencies and acute cases.
- Support patient education and shared decision-making, promoting informed consent and post-operative recovery plans.
- Adhere to all hospital policies, infection control standards, and professional conduct expectations.
- Facilitate smooth handover and transition of care when departing the role.

Practice Coverage
- Five OR days per week - Five Clinic days per week.
- On-Call: Two weeks a month.
Remuneration
100% OHIP fee-for-service billing, HOCC stipend, and optional surgical assistant call for additional income; overhead and anticipated monthly FFS billings to be discussed during interview process
Requirements
- Active FRCSC certification in General Surgery with valid licensures to practice in the province of Ontario.
- Clinical experience in general surgery with demonstrated competence in a broad range of surgical procedures.
- Valid membership in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) and current malpractice insurance coverage through Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
- Experience in rural or regional healthcare settings is highly valued.
- Strong clinical judgment, interpersonal communication, and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to participate in on-call duties and flexible scheduling as needed.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative healthcare team in a community hospital setting.
